Our Activities

The Assessment and Mapping of Mangrove Ecosystems and the Determination of Mangrove Ecosystem Functions within the Mangrove Landscape Unit (KLM) of Riau Province (2024) is a strategic research initiative aimed at producing comprehensive scientific information on the condition of mangrove ecosystems, their ecological functions, and sustainable coastal landscape management. This activity is a collaborative research effort between the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM), the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of Universitas Diponegoro, and the Sustainability Indonesia Foundation, working together to strengthen data availability, scientific methodology, and socio-ecological approaches for the management of mangrove landscape units in Riau.

The program includes a detailed assessment of mangrove ecosystem conditions through field surveys covering species identification, stand structure, vegetation density, degradation levels, and the biophysical characteristics of mangrove areas. The field data are integrated with spatial mapping using satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to generate accurate information on the distribution, extent, and dynamics of mangrove cover changes at the landscape scale. This mapping forms the basis for determining priority zones for rehabilitation, protection, and adaptive management according to ecological conditions and environmental pressures across the coastal region of Riau.

In addition, the program develops a determination of mangrove ecosystem functions within the Mangrove Landscape Unit (KLM), encompassing ecological functions (habitat provision, shoreline protection, carbon sequestration), economic functions (supporting fisheries, eco-tourism potential, sustainable resource use), and social functions (supporting the livelihoods and resilience of coastal communities). This functional analysis is carried out using a multidisciplinary approach, including community social studies, spatial analysis, and integration of biophysical survey results.

The outcomes of this activity include a comprehensive mangrove ecosystem map for the Riau KLM, an integrated assessment of mangrove conditions and ecosystem functions, and landscape-based management recommendations that can be used by local governments, BRGM, and other stakeholders for planning rehabilitation, protection, and sustainable utilization of mangrove areas. Through this collaborative research, the management of mangroves in Riau Province is expected to become more targeted, adaptive, and supportive of sustainable development goals as well as the enhancement of coastal ecosystem resilience.
