Sustainability Indonesia and PT PLN Nusantara Power

Tuban, 25 September 2024 – PT PLN Nusantara Power UP PLTU Tanjung Awar-Awar Tuban signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) with Sustainability Indonesia to implement a Mangrove Rehabilitation Program as part of the Masterplan for Sustainable Coastal Development Based on Marine Sedimentation Management in Morodemak and surrounding areas, Bonang Subdistrict, Demak Regency. The collaboration is carried out through PT PLN Nusantara Power’s Corporate Social Responsibility/Environmental and Social Responsibility (TJSL) program, demonstrating PLN’s commitment to contributing to coastal rehabilitation and environmental sustainability initiatives in the region.

Under this agreement, Sustainability Indonesia serves as the field implementing foundation, working in collaboration with academics from Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) and coordinated with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). The program is a continuation of the initiatives launched during the Soft Launching of the Sustainable Coastal Development Pilot Project in Demak on 11 October 2024.

The activities were officially held at PT PLN Nusantara Power UP PLTU Tanjung Awar-Awar Tuban and consist of several key components, including:

  1. Construction of wave-breaking structures (APO) using concrete buis rings;
  2. Establishment of demonstration plots (demplot) for mangrove planting behind the APO structures;
  3. Controlled sediment filling within the demplot area to support suitable substrate formation;
  4. Mangrove planting within the demonstration plots followed by structured monitoring.

This program aims to rehabilitate and restore mangrove ecosystems in accordance with the Masterplan for Sustainable Marine Sedimentation-Based Coastal Development in Morodemak and nearby coastal areas. The scope of intervention includes the construction of protected planting plots and the facilitation of mangrove growth to strengthen ecological resilience, support shoreline stability, and contribute to long-term sustainability of coastal ecosystems in Demak.
